Best Microbead Pillows Reviews 2019

What does it take to achieve a good night’s sleep? Obviously, you need a decent mattress, and a duvet or a blanket, depending on your preference. But what about the pillow?

We think the pillow is the most important component of this entire equation because it cradles your head, arguably the most sensitive part of your body. Have you given microbead pillows any thought?

They are the latest craze on the bedding market. However, they are more than just another fad. Microbead pillows are like buckwheat pillows but they are not quite as noisy.

They use tiny beads to create a platform that is equal parts supportive and comfortable. Like memory foam pillows, the best microbead pillows will evolve to meet the needs of your body.

However, they are nowhere near as expensive as many memory foam pillows, and that makes them highly attractive.

So what does a decent microbead pillow look like? If you don’t know, there’s no need to fret. We’ve done all the work for you, slept on all the microbead pillows that matter and identified the best among them.

Just look at the list we have generated below. These are the best microbead pillows available. If you don’t have the time to read through our extensive reviews, feast your eyes on the table below. It essentially summarizes everything we have to say about the microbead pillows:

Top 10 Best Microbead Pillows Reviews

1. Cushie Pillows Microbead Bolster Pillow

Cushie Pillows 7 inches x 12 inches Microbead Bolster...

The news keeps telling us that restful sleep is good for your heart, mind, and skin. If that is true, then this Cushie Pillows Microbead Bolster pillow will completely transform your health because it delivers great sleep.

These are not our words. Trust the manufacturers. They know their product. At 12 x 7 x 7 inches and 5.6 ounces, they deliberately made this pillow small because they wanted you to take it with you wherever you went. But it isn’t just the size that makes this possible.

The pillow will flatten to fit in your suitcase. The microbead filling the manufacturer used is to blame. This flexible material will conform to the precise shape of your body, keeping your knees and back adequately supported.

That is another factor you must consider. This pillow was not made for you to simply lay your head against. The portable design of the product is such that you can use it to prop your back or legs up as you lie in bed, read on your couch, watch television from the floor, basically any position that suits you.

If you love yoga and Pilates, the pillow can also work as a prop. Of course, every pillow is only as good as its cover. This one is spandex and nylon, a combination that makes for a soft fabric. When the manufacturers boast that their pillow is hypoallergenic, you can take them at their word.

This cover doesn’t store moisture.  As such, it doesn’t attract bacteria, dust mites or any of the other elements that cause allergic reactions. Naturally, with nylon and spandex, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to learn that you can only spot clean the pillow.

Some people will hate this. But this irritation won’t last, not once they realize that the pillow has double seams which won’t permit the filling to escape. This isn’t the kind of pillow that deflates.

Pros

  • Cheap.
  •  Small, portable, flexible.
  •  Conforms to the shape of the body.
  •  You get back and side pockets for storage purposes.
  • This product has a 100 percent Money-Back Guarantee and a Three-Year Warranty.

Cons

  • Comes with a bad smell
  • Isn’t supportive enough for demanding physical needs.

2. World’s Best Charcoal Microbead Bolster Tube

World's Best 2 pcs Microbead Bolster Tube Pillows, Smooth Cool Touch...

‘I get the best sleep on these since you can smoosh them to just the way you need them.’ These were the words of one very satisfied customer. And we agree. These pillows make effective use of microbead technology.

They don’t just conform to the contours of your body. They have that sort of squishy structure that allows you to play with their shape until they give you what you want.

And that attribute helped once we took them to the office and found that they gave our backs the support we needed to keep working in comfort. They delivered similar results in the car. We haven’t taken them on any planes yet. But we assume that they are just as comfortable there.

And you get two of them. So you can support your legs and head or back or even the neck at the same time. Don’t forget about the polyester/spandex cover. We touched it and it was quite cool and soft, perfect for anyone that needs to keep their face pressed against the pillow for long periods.

This one isn’t as lightweight as the Cushie Pillows Bolster pillow but it falls within the same range. It is also a little smaller, so you’re not losing anything. In fact, it is probably more portable.

The hypoallergenic characteristics are also present. The travel clip is an interesting bonus. The Cushie Pillows Bolster doesn’t have one, so keep that in mind.

On the other hand, If you are suffering from hemorrhoids pain due to sitting on the chair in your office for a long time, you should use seat cushions for hemorrhoids on your chair.

Pros

  • Small and Portable.
  • price is reasonable.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Squishy, flexible, supportive..

Cons

  • Too small for some
  • A little stiff for those with troubling physical conditions.

3. Cushie Pillows 11x8x6 inches Microbead Bolster

Cushie Pillows 11 inches x 8 inches x 6 inches Microbead Bolster...

We don’t know what to make of this pillow. One customer said that she did not think it would be so tiny when she bought it. And she isn’t wrong. At 5.6 ounces, the pillow is both small and lightweight.

In fact, it is even smaller than the cushie pillows product we mentioned above, though, by only a small margin. And that is why we don’t know what to make of it. The customer above, Lynn Flannery Wareman, was quite pleased with the pillow, even though it was so small.

She did not mention the fact that the product shares many of the same specs as the Cushie Pillows product we covered above. This is still microbead technology, so you can still trust the pillow to conform to your body’s shape.

The small measurements make the item even easier to store in a suitcase and carry. As with the other Cushie pillows product, this one will support the knees and the back.

Surgery patients who need to recover have spoken fondly of it. Supposedly, it keeps their injured arms and necks and other parts properly supported. By molding to the contours of their bodies and holding critical pressure points, it also reduces numbness.

You probably think that the cover will make all the difference but you’re wrong. This one is also made from nylon and spandex which, we admit, is still quite soft. By resisting moisture storage, the pillow keeps fungi, dust mites, and other allergy-causing elements away.

Is it squishy? We just told you that it resembles the previous Cushie Pillows product in every way. So, yes, it is quite cushy and cool and you are still required to spot clean it using mild soap and a damp cloth.

That raises a question. Is there any point in buying this model over the previous one? Well, we left two things out. First of all, this one is slightly cheaper. Secondly, the shape is actually different. You still get the double seams that keep the beads inside the pillow.

The chemical smell is also present. But the shape varies and it might explain why so many customers mentioned placing the item between their legs and knees. Do with that what you will.

You can either take the previous item’s cylindrical design or this one. It all comes down to taste.

Pros

  • Cheap.
  • Soft, stretchy cover.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Double seamed to prevent leaking.

Cons

  • Has a chemical smell
  • Requires labor-intensive maintenance.

4. Deluxe Comfort Mooshi Squish Microbead Pillow

Deluxe Comfort Mooshi Squish Microbead Bed Pillow, 14' x 7' - Airy Squishy...

You’re not seeing things. This pillow looks somewhat like the other pillows on this list, which isn’t that shocking. It is a bolster pillow, after all. The cylindrical shape is to be expected.

But this particular item also looks shorter, which makes it both weird and interesting. Standing at 3.8x19.5x14 inches and 9.6 ounces, it is smaller than the Cushie Pillows products above but also heavier.

As far as we can tell, ‘Deluxe Comfort’ designed it primarily as a neck pillow. The mooshi microbeads conform to your body’s shape. Some of our members have attested to the pillow’s ability to provide cervical and vertebrae support.

But that doesn’t make the pillow the exclusive domain of the physically incapable. We tried using the item under some other pillows as per the instructions of ‘Deluxe Comfort’ and we were not disappointed. This bolster product gave the other pillows added elevation and support.

So whether you need to recover from surgery or you just want a good night’s sleep, this pillow seems to deliver on all fronts. We can’t forget the fashion component. The pillow, if you can believe it, is small enough for you to carry with you wherever you go.

And it comes in so many interesting colors that it can also double as a fashion accessory. The dust mite-resistance and hypoallergenic properties are appealing, but you might be surprised by the number of customers who love this product for its aesthetic quality and nothing else.

Pros

  • Squishy, supportive, appropriate for surgical recovery.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Small and portable.

Cons

  • The cover is not removable
  • Slight chemical smell.

5. Deluxe Comfort MicroBead Cloud Pillow

Deluxe Comfort Microbead Cloud Bed-Pillows, X-Large, White

This probably feels like such a drastic shift. The last Deluxe Comfort pillow we looked at was a bolster pillow that served a particular ergonomic purpose. Sure, it could keep you and me comfortable, but it also endeavored to meet the needs of those customers who struggled with physical disabilities of one form or another.

This pillow doesn’t care about any of that. Sure, it uses microbeads. It is supposed to have millions of them packed within a removable zipper cover. As with all microbeads, these also conform to the shape of your body.

So we have to assume that people with debilitating physical conditions can still use the pillow. However, ‘Deluxe Comfort’ only ever mentions the comfort their pillow will deliver to the ordinary user, keeping the head and neck supported, and maintaining proper alignment with the spine to ensure restful sleep.

We definitely felt the item cradle out necks and heads, and we felt no need to wake up in the middle of the night because of neck pains and shoulder aches. So the pillow earns a few more points for keeping people like us refreshed after a long nap.

The size is fascinating. Everyone who bought this pillow says that it is ridiculously large, especially if you get the largest size they have. One customer said that their rather large pillowcases couldn’t fit this pillow.

And yet the makers assure us that the pillow is meant for travel. You can take it with you in a car or even on a plane. The size makes it a little off-putting for the office.

But then again, it is a question of where you work. We can attest to the fact that it is quite light, just what you expect from a travel pillow. The hypoallergenic properties will appeal to allergy sufferers, of which there are quite a few in our ranks. The microbead construction is worth emphasizing because the filling used in the pillow allows air to circulate through it.

This explains why our faces felt so cool. And for the moment, the pillow seems to retain its shape. along with head and neck pain, if you also have ear pain, you can check our guide on ear pain relief pillows.

Pros

  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Cool and relaxing, permits air circulation.
  •  Removable cover.
  • Portable.

Cons

  •  Too large for some.
  •   Also too thick for some.

6. Cushie Pillows 11x3x11 inches

Cushie Pillows 11 inches x 11 inches Microbead Squishy/Flexible/Comfortable...

Remember how the Deluxe Comfort Pillow above was so much bigger than most people expected? Well, this one is so much smaller. This is also another Cushie Pillows product.

So let us get some of the obvious factors out of the way. The manufacturers used polystyrene microbeads. These are responsible for making the pillow so squishy. ‘Squishy’ means ‘comfortable’ for some people.

You also get the double seamed nylon/spandex cover. This material is flexible, capable of stretching to meet the need. It is soft and cool to the touch. We told you that some of our people suffer from allergies.

Naturally, they appreciated the hypoallergenic properties. As far as we can tell, this is still a case of the cover refusing to store moisture which, in turn, keeps bacteria, dust mites, mold and the like away.

As with the previous Cushie Pillows product with its nylon/spandex cover, this one requires spot cleaning which takes time. But it can be done. The flexibility and versatility remain unchanged.

The tame measurements of the pillow permit you to take it with you wherever you go. It can work in the office, in your bed, (see more bed rest pillows) on your couch, even in your car.

The physically ill are not forgotten either. If anything, the makers have continued to emphasize the role this pillow can play in the recovery of patients that just had surgery. So what makes this Cushie pillow special?

If you said ‘Shape’, you’re correct. This is the first of the Cushie Pillows we have talked about that features the classic pillow shape. You can still fit it between your legs or behind your neck.

It is a question of whether or not the shape works for you. We have no complaints regarding this issue.

Pros

  •  Hypoallergenic.
  • Soft, flexible, removable cover.
  • Supportive microbead structure.

Cons

  • Bad smell

7. Cloudz Dual Comfort Microbead Travel Pillow

Cloudz Dual Comfort Microbead Travel Neck Pillow - Blue

Have you noticed that every pillow we have reviewed above promises support during travel as a bonus? That sort of versatility is a good thing but it also trains you to expect a watered-down experience.

This is what happens with products that try to do everything. You cannot possibly expect them to perform every function perfectly. The Cloudz Dual Comfort pillow is primarily a travel pillow, so you can trust it to do this one job excellently.

This is what happened when we took it out for a spin. We noticed that the small polystyrene beads in the pillow kept us perfectly relaxed because they could adjust to match the shape of our necks.

Some other pillows have microbeads but their structure becomes overbearing. They exert pressure against your body rather than supporting it. This one kept our neck stable and aligned without being too overbearing.

We also found that we could use the pillow on our heads if the need arose. The experience wasn’t necessarily comfortable for some of us. But then we realized the uses this approach had once a massage table entered the mix

The cover is fascinating because it has a soft, plush side and a smooth, relaxing side. So you can change sides to fit your tastes. We can’t forget the snap closure. Yes, it keeps the pillow secured to your neck but you can also get a little imaginative by using it to attach the pillow to your luggage.

This way, you never have to worry about losing the product. We should probably talk about the durability. Some customers complained that this product doesn’t necessarily retain its shape, not if it is used frequently for several months.

Keep that in mind if you spend a lot of time on the road.

Pros

  • Available in multiple colors.
  • Dual-sided cover, almost like having two pillows.
  • The snap closure simplifies transport.

Cons

  • Loses firmness over time.
  • Filling isn’t adjustable.

8. Cloudz Pool and Beach Microbead Pillow

Cloudz Pool & Beach Microbead Pillow - Blue

Do not be too quick to compare this pillow to the previous one. Yes, they are both Cloudz pillows and they are both meant for travel. But the previous model was meant to support your neck in a car or a plane.

Cloudz, which has more than a decade of experience in the pillow business, wants you to take this item to the beach. The shape alone will tell you that it is meant for more traditional purposes. It looks like a beanbag.

The shell is part cotton part polyurethane. The decision to use Terry Fabric is interesting. The cotton/polyurethane shell is durable. It will keep the filling in place, preventing leakages.

But the terry fabric is moisture absorbent, which might present a problem for the beach. When we actually handled the pillow, we were surprised to find that the surface cover wasn’t that soft, not on the outside. The reverse was true for the inside.

That suggests that you can turn the cover inside out to improve the experience, but what if you do not like the color on the inside? In case it wasn’t clear, the cover is removable, so washing and maintenance are not a problem.

You still get the microbeads. Cloudz calls them ‘premium comforlite microbeads’. For the moment, we have no reason to believe that they are better or worse than ordinary microbeads. Either way, they are as supportive as they are relaxing.

Unlike the snap enclosure on the previous Cloudz pillow, this one has an elastic strap that we used to keep the pillow attached to our chairs. The results were satisfactory but only because we had a skinny backed chair. Anything bigger will present a challenge.

Pros

  • Removable cover.
  •  Supportive microbead filling.
  • Elastic strap attaches pillow to chairs.

Cons

  • Elastic strap won’t work for larger beach chairs.
  • Too small for some, might cause heads to slip off.

9. Total Pillow Microbead Pillow

Total Pillow-Travel-Neck/Head/Lumbar Support-Twist/Contour Any...

Wow! We had no idea what to make of this pillow when we first saw it. Coming in at 12x12x3 inches and 9.6 ounces, the pillow is small and light enough for you to carry when you travel.

But the design is the most fascinating bit. The pillow is round with sharp edges and a hole in the middle. Some of us wanted to call it a star. But ‘Total Pillow’ corrected us by calling the design ‘Petal’ which makes some sense.

The product is made from brushed fleece and spandex. This much becomes obvious once you touch it. The pillow is very soft. And the spandex makes the material stretchy. This adds to the soothing softness of the fabric. But when the pillow is exposed to sharp stress, it is also more likely to tear, as some customers have testified.

As for its use, we were perplexed in the beginning. But then we started experimenting and things made sense. This pillow works everywhere. You can fold it in half and place it behind your head.

You can sit on it. You can support your knees over it. It works great as lumbar support. Millions of polystyrene microbeads will conform to your body shape, allowing you to rest in a relaxed, comfortable, healthy posture.

We asked around and found that people with physical disabilities got a lot of use out of the pillow. So that’s an attractive bonus. Don’t forget the hole. It lets you fit the pillow over the handle of your suitcase which, in turn, makes carrying it so much easier.

Pros

  •  Has comfortable yet supportive polystyrene microbeads.
  •  Brushed fleece and spandex cover is soft and flexible.
  • Small, easy to store and transport.

Cons

  • Stretchy fabric tends to tear, causing leaks.
  •   So many knockoffs on the market.

10. Squishy Deluxe Microbead Body Pillow

Squishy Deluxe Microbead Body Pillow with Silky Smooth Removable Cover...

The products above are some of the top microbead pillows on the market. And if you can get your head to rest against one of them at night, you are assured long restful sleep.

But what happens if you buy one of the pillows above and you sleep with it only to wake up with a sore back? Better yet, what if you couldn’t fall asleep because you tried and failed to find a comfortable position?

That doesn’t make any of the pillows we have reviewed bad. It just means that you need a full-body pillow such as the Squishy Deluxe Microbead. Some people sleep better when they have a long, soft, soothing bedding item to hug.

And this product, which stands at 22x2.4x6.8 inches and 2.4 pounds, provides plenty of surface area for both men and women to spoon. Yes, pregnant women are going to love it, particularly when they learn that it is hypoallergenic. But there are plenty of men here who also got a kick out of it.

The cover is Nylon and Spandex which means that it is quite soft and smooth. The supportive aspects of the product can be attributed to the proprietary food-grade premium microbead fill that will transform to fit every corner and crevice of your body, making certain that your entire physical form is adequately supported.

The cylindrical pillow is supposed to be more breathable than other pillows because it allows air to circulate through its filling. But some customers have refuted that breathability by complaining that the pillow can get quite warm during certain seasons.

Then again, such complaints are very few which suggests that this is probably an issue of individual preferences. Of course, even if the pillow proves to be far warmer than promised, the 6-month 100 percent guarantee gives you options. In other words, you can return the item if you’re not happy. The cover is removable and machine washable which is convenient.

And despite its shape, you should know that the pillow, as a whole, can be folded as required.

Pros

  • Hypoallergenic
  •  Supportive proprietary food-grade microbeads
  • Silky smooth removable cover

Cons

  • Not cheap
  •  Comes with a smell, though faint in some cases, fades after a while

 Microbead Pillow Buying Guide

Microbead pillows are filled with polystyrene beads. Some people hear that and automatically presume that any microbead pillow you find will satisfy your needs so long as it has microbeads.

But that isn’t true. Microbead pillows are not all equal. Some are better than others. And if you’re looking to buy the best possible microbead pillows on the market, keep these factors in mind:

Filling

Everyone assumes that, when they buy a microbead pillow, the product will have polystyrene beads on the inside. But that isn’t always the case. Some dishonest manufacturers expect you to take their word for it that their pillows have beads on the inside.

But sometimes they use Styrofoam pellets. And because you can’t rip a pillow on display open to check the filling, you are encouraged to check reviews. Other customers will tell you whether or not the pillow you wish to buy has real polystyrene beads.

If you want different pillow filling materials, you can find wool, down or copper filling pillow and more.

Quantity

It isn’t enough to confirm the quality of the filling. The quantity also matters. Pillows with too many beads are too thick. They provide too much elevation. But some customers prefer it that way.

You also have cases where a pillow has few beads, so much so that it feels flat and unsupportive. But you will find people who prefer such microbead pillows. Make sure that the thickness of your pillow matches your needs.

Cover

Every microbead pillow has a shell that keeps the beads on the inside together. You need to find a shell whose fabric is not only soft and soothing to the touch but durable and breathable.

Of course, fabrics that have all these attributes are typically attached to expensive pillows. You might have to choose which of these attributes you want to prioritize. A breathable cover works best.

Do not forget to consider the maintenance issue. The best covers should be removable and machine-washable. A shell that has to be spot-cleaned is troublesome.

Stitching

The stitching style is very important because it is going to determine your pillow cover’s ability to keep its beads in place. If a pillow has poor stitching, it will start leaking beads after a few washes. And you do not want that.

Type

You can get microbead pillows in a variety of types and shapes. There are microbead bolster pillows, microbead body pillows, and even microbead beanbags, to mention but a few.

The type of pillow you choose is going to depend on your particular need. The fact that you’re dealing with microbead pillows doesn’t matter all that much. Just choose a pillow type that appeals to you and worry about the microbead aspect later.

If you need more soft types of pillow, see our wool pillow reviews.

Microbead Pillow FAQs

What is Microbead?

Microbeads are small spheres. They have a lycra or spandex casing that accentuates their elastic properties. Microbeads are environmental hazards that have been banned for use in cosmetic products.

But that doesn’t include their use in pillows. Microbeads are appealing because they are soft, pliable filling that allows your pillow to conform to your body’s shape.

How to Make a Microbead Pillow?

1). Get two pieces of fabric. Make sure that they are the same size and shape. They must be larger than the pillow you wish to make.

2). Attach three sides of one fabric piece to three sides of the other using pins. Each pin should be positioned in a manner that allows its length to run parallel to the sides of the fabric.

3). Get some thread and sew the three sides together. Make sure that each seam has a three and a half-inch allowance inside the edges. Once you complete this stage, take the pins out.

4). Turn the case inside out. Some people prefer to iron the fabric to remove the creases. At this point, the shell of your pillow is ready.

Start filling the shell with microbeads. The amount you use will depend on your preference. Do not use so many microbeads that you fail to close the opening of the shell.

5). Get some more thread and stitch the opening shut. Your microbead pillow is done.

Are Microbead Pillows Safe?

Microbeads are bad for the environment because they degrade very slowly. However, for the moment, no evidence has been presented to suggest that they are a threat to human life in pillows.

As such, you have every reason to deem microbead pillows safe.

Can I Wash Microbead Pillows?

Most microbead pillows require spot cleaning. This is where you use mild soap and a damp cloth to rub the areas of your pillow that are stained.

A washing machine is likely to create tears, causing the beads to spill out. If you are willing to take the risk, make sure that you place the pillow in a pillowcase. Tie the case’s opening. This should give the pillow some protection.

Though, you are still encouraged to use a gentle cycle. Pay close attention to the instructions your manufacturer gives you.

Buckwheat VS Microbead – Which is Better?

Buckwheat pillows are filled with buckwheat which is a husk of sorts. Like Microbead pillows, buckwheat pillows can conform to the shape of the head, providing support to all the crucial pressure points.

You cannot compare or contrast these two pillows based on comfort because the attribute relies on subjective measures like personal preference. Some might argue that Buckwheat pillows are loud.

But again, you have to take personal preference into account. Quite a few customers love the soft rustling that buckwheat pillows make.

That being said, it is easy to see why some people might elevate the buckwheat pillow. Not only does it become more comfortable with time as the husks become more polished but buckwheat is an eco-friendly filling.

On the other hand, microbeads are bad for the environment.

Is The Microbead Pillow Long Lasting?

The durability of your microbead pillow will depend on its quality and the way you maintain it. Poor quality microbead pillows tend to fall apart quickly, causing the beads to spill out.

The polystyrene beads have also been known to decline in strength and durability when exposed to a dryer.

As such, if you buy a high-quality microbead pillow and you maintain it appropriately, using the spot cleaning method rather than a washing machine, it should, theoretically, last as long as a buckwheat pillow.

A buckwheat pillow can last a decade.

Is there any off-gassing of Microbead Pillow?

Most microbead pillows have a bad odor when you first unwrap them. The chemical smell is supposed to dissipate over time.

Conclusion

What makes a great microbead pillow? Most of them have microbeads. So that isn’t enough. The items above are definitely the top microbead pillows on the market. But why is that?

First of all, so many of them are squishy but supportive. In other words, they are comfortable for ordinary users but they also have the firmness required to keep customers with physical ailments happy by supporting all the relevant pressure points.

You must also keep the cover in mind. The pillows above have interesting but largely ergonomic shapes. And their microbeads are held in place by soft, soothing covers.

As far as the quality of pillow is concerned, some pillows have softer covers than others. Some covers are also more breathable. But some people don’t care about soft, breathable covers. They only want the firmest microbead pillow on the market.

Others will pay any fee you ask to get the softest, squishiest microbead pillow on the market. Put simply, each one of the pillows above is going to appeal to the needs of different people.
