For A Comforter Lover: Should Learn About Feathers And Its Construction

Feathers are the distinctive outer covering on birds. It is made out of keratin.  Feathers have the most complex structures. A bird’s feather is consisting of several parts such as calamus, rachis, barbs, vane, barbules barbicels, hooklet, afterfeathers, distal umbilicus.

Calamus: Feathers has a central shaft called Calamus. This calamus has the un pigmented and smooth base that extends under the skin into the feather.

Rachis: is the segment above the skin, from which the smaller barbs extends. This barb is the set of filaments expands on each side of the rachis.

Vane: Vane is the portion of the feather that has barbs. This barbs sometimes called downy barbs and barbicels.

Downy barbs: Downy barbs are the barbs those are not hooked together.

Barbicels: Barbicels hook the barbules together.

Barbules: Barbules is the barbs those have two sets filaments those cross the adjacent barbs.

Hooklet: Hooklet hooks barbs together.

Distal umbilicus:  The portion at the base of the vane is called distal umbilicus. After feathers are the barbs without hooks in the area of the distal umbilicus.

Benefits of Feathers to the bird

Feather provides different types of benefit to the birds. To protect the body birds need the feather, to fly in the air birds needs feather. And also for thermal insulation, and waterproofing birds needs feather. But a most fundamental benefit of a feather is the protection of the birds. And even for both cold and hot environment birds uses a feather to provide optimum interest to him.

Types of feather

There are mainly two types of feather

1. Vane feather

2. Down feathers.

The exterior part of the body of the birds covered by vaned feather and the underneath portion of vane feather is down feather.

This vaned feather is two types

1. Contour feather

2. Flight feather.

Other types of the feather also found, such as Filoplume feather, Semiplum Feather, Bristle Feather.

According to our discussion, we have found different types of feather such as

  • Contour feather.
  • Flight feather.
  • Down feather.
  • Filoplume feather,
  • Semiplum Feather,
  • Bristle Feather

Contour feather.

It covers most of the body of the bird. This also provides the beautiful appearance of the birds. It offers different types of benefit to the birds. The most basic advantage is to protect the birds from sunshine, rain, wind and save the birds body of different kinds of injury. There are many types of color we have seen in contour feather.

The other name of Contour feather is pennaceous feathers. I am typically a vaned feather. And the main shaft of the feather called rachis. Rachis has branches or barbs, and the barbs themselves formulates branched called barbules. For cross-attachment to these barbules needs hooks called barbicels.

Flight feather

This feather is larger than contour feather. Flight feather is found in wing and tail of the birds. Flight feather of the wing are sometimes called remiges, and Flight feather of the tail is sometimes called rectrices that controlling the flight. These Flight feather of the tail are valuable feathers for flying in the sky.

The main shaft of the feather called rachis. Rachis has branches or barbs, and the barbs themselves formulates branched called barbules. For cross-attachment to These barbules needs hooks called barbicels. We can distinguish the flight feathers into three groups.

The first group of feathers is attached to the wrist and finger bones, those are the ends of the wings, and these are responsible for the forward thrust.

The second group of feathers is attached to the ulna bones, those are the middle of the wings, and these are responsible for lifting the bird's body in the air

The third group of feathers is called tertiaries that are closest to the body.

Down feathers

These feathers are the most useful feathers for down jackets, comforter, pillow and other bedding items. Down feathers are found under contour feather. Because of lacking barbules and hooklets down feathers are naturally fluffy and soft. Typically, it sizes small. And also it allows trapping air, so it provides thermal insulation to the birds. And it gives protection to the bird from heat and cold.

Filoplumes

Like a human being, Filoplumes has hair at his heads only. It has a long shaft and few barbs at the top of the long shaft. What are functions of Filoplumes is not clear? It is thought that it protects the birds. And also it has a sensory function.

Semiplumes

Semiplumes loose vanes but have a broad rachis. It can found along with contour feather or separately. It provides insulation and aerodynamics to the birds.

Bristle feathers

Opposite to the filoplumes, it has a long and stiff rachis, but we can find few barbs at the base of the rachis. As same as Filoplumes, what are functions of Bristle feathers is not clear, but it is thought that it protects the birds. And also it has a sensory function.
